Clara Brownell teacher awarded NASA fellowship

Cindy Townsend, an 8th grade teacher at Clara Brownell Middle School, was awarded an Endeavor Fellowship with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which will allow her to earn a special certificate from Teachers College at Columbia University (New York).

Townsend, a math teacher in the Umatilla School District since 2002, will take part in NASA’s Endeavor Science Teaching Certificate Project, which provides live, online training for educators to earn the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) certificate. The project is funded through NASA’s Office of Education. Townsend is one of 51 teachers from around the country who will take part in the fellowship, which provides course fees and graduate credit from regionally accredited college partners, course materials, and a stipend for resources.

UMATILLA RIVER BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION

Welcome to the Umatilla School District website. Our purpose is to provide our students with a top quality public education so that they may become the successful, contributing citizens of the future.

Our school district consists of 1320 students, 88 teachers, 76 classified, 6 administrators, 9 supervisory, and 3 confidential staff members. We have three schools: an elementary, a middle and a high school. Our location is at the confluence of the Umatilla and Columbia Rivers, and we are rich in history of Lewis and Clark as well as the Tribes of the Umatilla, Walla Walla, and Cayuse Indians.

Umatilla is a natural transportation hub, as we are located near the river, the railroad, and two interstate highways. While our economic base has primarily been agricultural in the past, we are seeing more diversity these days due, in part, to our proximity to transportation.

You are welcome to peruse our web site. Our school pages contain our curriculum for grades K-12 as well as lists of activities and general school news.

We are proud of our district: our staff is working hard, our students are learning and our community gives us wonderful support.  So please feel welcome to explore our web site and learn more about Umatilla School District.
